Khartoum: Sudan’s Army Chief, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, announced on Saturday that a temporary government would soon be established in the war-torn country.
Speaking about the formation of the new government, General Burhan stated that it would be a "caretaker or wartime government" consisting of independent experts. He emphasized that this administration would be responsible for completing the power transition process. However, he did not specify an exact timeline for its formation.
This announcement comes at a time when the Sudanese army has made progress in its ongoing battle against the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
According to General Burhan, the primary goal of the new government will be to facilitate the completion of military operations and to clear the country of RSF fighters.
He also hinted at potential political changes that could pave the way for national elections in Sudan. Additionally, he mentioned that a constitutional document would be drafted to outline the responsibilities of the new prime minister, assuring that the military would not interfere in their duties.
The conflict between Sudan’s military and the RSF erupted on April 15, 2023. According to available data, tens of thousands of people have been killed, and nearly 12 million others have been displaced. Efforts to integrate the RSF into the national army, led by General Burhan and RSF leader General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, have so far failed.
According to UN estimates, thousands have died in the conflict, 1.6 million people have been forced to flee their homes, and approximately 25 million—more than half of Sudan’s population—are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.
On Saturday, General Burhan reaffirmed that no negotiations would take place with the RSF until its fighters withdraw from the capital, Khartoum, as well as from West Kordofan and South Darfur.
